Sardinia has a 24,090 km2 surface, at the centre
of the western Mediterranean; it is shaped as a rectangle (the
ancients saw it shaped as a sandal) and faces a gulf on each side:
the gulf of Cagliari to the south, that of Oristano to the west,
that of Orosei to the east, and the gulf of Asinara to the north.
The territory is mainly mountainous; the highest
peak - Punta Lamarmora - raises for 1834 metres at the centre
of the isle, in the Gennargentu massif. The only plain is Campidano,
which crosses the isle from west southwards, linking the gulf
of Oristano to that of Cagliari.
In Sardinia, grey and cloudy days are very
uncommon; precipitations basically occur between November and
February and they are not very frequent.
